Its funny when you think about how little phrases such as the one above can have a tremendous impact on your life. They can make you re-evaluate your belief systems, and the way you handle business; indeed some of them can even change your perspective on life all together and catapult you onto a new plane of existence. I often wonder what great quote inspired the creators of the jet engine, the cellular phone, or Popeye's chicken just to name a few. And while we may never know what created the inspiration for every new invention or business, we can all agree on one thing, the creators lived by their own standards not by those imposed by others.
When you have a new dream or a new hope the first thing you do is share it with a friend or close relative. That's because most people need to have their dreams or ideas validated by other people before they are sure of their value. But it only reaches that stage if it passes your initial checks on not only the idea, but also on your own self worth and the limits you have placed on certain characteristics you deem necessary to turn the dream into a reality. Unfortunately a lot of us made these decision a long time ago and they are based on what we have heard from others concerning ourselves. For instance, a girl has a dream of being a model, but her whole life people have told her she is short and ugly. Do you think this girl will truly entertain a dream about being a model with that kind of self-image? A mentally handicapped person whats to become a scientist, and a deaf person whats to create music. How difficult would it be to continue on with everyone telling them that its impossible, but notice something extremely important that happens in these situations. Notice that the dream continues to live until the person nourishing the dream buys into the limitations others have placed on them.
There are 3 walls in front of all of us, first is the opinion of those that we hold most dear, second is the opinions of our collective cultures, third is our very own opinions. They are placed in this order for a reason as people will seldom go against the grain of a close friend or family member, and it becomes twice as difficult when fighting against the added pressures of culture. But one fight that you can't fight and you won't even try to fight is your own limits. If you honestly believe that you will not succeed you will not even try. Make your own limits and you will see that your potential is limitless. Part of developing a limit free philosophy is disposing of any of the limiting ideas in your life, and all of them come from external sources. It is said that babies are born with 2 innate fears, both of which can be overcome and neither of which puts a limit on your potential, the fear of heights (falling) and the fear of loud noises, everything else is learned
Those 17 little words carry so much meaning and so many different messages can be pulled out of them. Bottom line is that nothing would have ever been created if the creators had bought into the limitations of others be it people or cultures. Live up to your standards, set your own ceiling, a fly towards your own sun. If you follow in the footsteps of other people, the best thing that can happen, is you end up where they are.
