Any of you that have known me or heard me for any length of time have probably heard me talk about pain vs. pleasure which is an interesting piece of philosophy that I personally agree with but did not personally create. The idea of it was introduced to me by Tony Robbins and it pretty much says that all human decisions are made based on a desire to move towards pleasure and away from pain. It goes further to say that pain is a stronger motivator then pleasure which means that people will do more to avoid pain then to achieve pleasure. This in my mind is the failure of most people, they lack the desire to overcome this natural instinct, to use something called discipline, and they fight pleasure. They ignore the long term pleasure made possible by reading a book because of the short term pain associated with missing their favorite TV-series. They go through their lives avoiding short term pain by indulging in short term pleasures at the expense of long term pleasure.
This is the true meaning of discipline in my opinion, the ability to make you do what you don’t want to do because you know that you need to do it. The beauty of the body and the mind is that after you do this consistently for an amount of time it becomes a habit. Once you’re at that stage it becomes pleasurable for you to do it and when you don’t it throws your whole day off.
Another thing almost everyone that has talked to me for any period of time has heard me say is that we are all business owners. Your life is your business and just like any other business you have to choose what parts of your business you will invest in, what relationships you will invest in and continue as well as what relationships you while chose to end and why. How do you rate things and what will you do to make your business more valuable and how will you look at past events and what lessons will you learn from them? All of these are questions that every business owner must ask themselves at some point and you are no different. Your mind, body, and spirit are your business and your life is the product. Would you allow another company to attach itself to yours and drain your company dry? Would you allow another company to be careless with your company’s assets? Would you allow that company to destroy your product? Then why to you let people?
Let go of things that remove more value then they bring to the table. Sacrifice those short term pleasures for the long term pleasures. Guard your product with everything you have in you, be strong enough not to fight the sands of time, and wise enough to see that they are moving. Practice the law of non-resistance and move through life sensitive to the things going on around you; it is never a good thing to hold on to anything trying to move away from you. Understand the definition of meekness and be meek for they shall inherit the earth.
